Happy Birthday Pappy

Today is Pappy's birthday. I can't remember if he would have been 93 or 94. But either way, I miss him. I miss his laugh. I miss the way he'd always call me and tell me to be careful. I miss his silly stories and the way he remembered that I "went all the way down the mall to buy him coffee". I miss him talking about the time he nearly poured the entire box of baking soda in the Christmas cookies. I miss his harmonica playing. I miss seeing him ride his lawn mower all over the yard and pulling up to the kitchen window and asking for a hamburger. I miss him.

Happy Birthday Pappy. I'm sure if there are balloons, streamers and birthday cakes in heaven, you've found them and are having yourself one heck of a party. I love you!

Sick Ones Update

So, Gabby has been on antibiotics since Monday last week. Just yesterday, Zack decided to join her and his ear infection started. One trip to kids urgent care and 2 pharmacies later (and NO antibiotics by the way) we were back home. Now, the story about the pharmacy not filling his prescription. . . It's Saturday night at 6:50p and I drive up to the window at CVS drive thru. I see that they close at 7p, so I'm thinking, "great! I made it just in time". I hand the prescription over and the gal at the window starts asking me questions that make me realize that I'm not going to be able to get his medicine! So, I said to her, "Am I going to be able to get this filled tonight?" She says, "no". I look at my watch and yes, it's 6:50pm and they close at 7:00pm. Funny, I didn't know that 6:50p was the same as 7:00p. So i snatch the prescription out of her hand and take off for another pharmacy. Again, no luck. We came home empty handed and doubled up on motrin to make it through the night. Luckily, we did.

After church, we headed back to CVS drive thru and guess what? That same gal was working the drive through. She remembered me. She said, "oh, you're back". I said, "yes, I wasn't able to find a pharmacy to fill this and my poor boy has been in pain". She says, "oh! well, it usually takes at 15 minutes to fill this, can you give me that long?"

Are you kidding me? Last night she was nearly pushing me out of the drive thru and now she's willing to fill the prescription in 15 minutes.

Now that the two older kids have ear infections, I'm just waiting for the baby to come down with it too.

Will it end?

Green Thumb Therapy

Today is the perfect Southern California day. This is why we So. Cal people live here. The sun is so warm and the breeze is from the ocean and there isn't a cloud in the sky. The blue of the sky looks like a Tiffany's box (although I've never seen one in real life!) But I imagine it's the same pretty, light, perfect blue.
So, this morning everyone woke up relatively happy and I decided to take a chance and run a few errands before Kindergarten pick up. We ran to HomeDepot and picked up some bags of soil and some flowers as well as a tomato plant (decided to try one this year). We came home and started getting our hands dirty literally and WOW! how much fun the boys had. And while we were in the sunshine, I didn't hear one horrible cough! We got all the plants planted and had dirt under our fingernails. For me, it was therapy! For the boys, I think it was just an excuse to get really dirty but that's ok. We had a good time.

Sick Ones

My kids have been sick before but this time around, it seems like it's taking more of a toll than normal. The baby has been spiking a fever in the afternoon for the last 3 days. This immediately turns my normally happy go lucky 18 month old into the saddest little boy on the planet. He cries at everything and his cheeks get so flushed that he looks like he just ran a marathon.
My 3 year old has a horrible cough and is just generally crabby and cranky. We're also dealing with the terrible 3's which consists of many temper tantrums and moments of intense disobedience. The oldest is fighting double ear infections and is trying to determine where tattle tale stops and helper starts. She and her brother are at each other's throats at least 50 percent of the time and while they are all under the weather, it seems to be much worse.
Mommy is tired and worn out. She's at her wits end with disobedience and sickness. I know it will end, but not even close to soon enough.

The Big Six!

Today my girl turns 6 years old and even as I type, I look at the clock and realize that it literally was 6 years ago to the MINUTE, that my Dr. told me to not go home from my regular appointment with her. She told me that I was to walk over to the hospital and check myself in...we were having a baby today!
I was on bedrest the last 2 months of my pregnancy. I had very high blood pressure. The baby was fine, it was me who was not! So, after being on my best bedrest behavior and still having blood pressures of 170/110, the Dr. said it was time to get this baby out.
I walked over to the hospital in a fog, thinking, "How can this be?" Dave isn't here with me. Isn't your water supposed to break before you have a baby? My mom isn't here. Oh my gosh, I"m having a baby today". Within 30 minutes, Dave was by my side and we started the induction process. My Dad and sister were on their way quickly and before I knew it, we were well into the process and I was having contractions that were more than I could bear. Thank God for the epidural!
8:56pm Gabby was born. 6 years later, I still love that little bundle (who of course is not so little anymore).

Happy Birthday my 6 year old wonder. I love you!

Slumber Party

Tonight we celebrated Gabby's 6th birthday with a few friends. All Gabby wanted was a slumber party. Complete with hotdogs and macaroni and cheese for dinner, cupcakes, and movie night with popcorn. So, how could I not make that a reality.

Here they are, before the real festivities started.

The finished products.

Hotdogs and macaroni dinner. Don't they look happy?

Stay tuned for breakfast photos....

She did it again. Just call her the toothless wonder.

The Family that Bikes Together

We spent most of our morning and afternoon biking today. Our legs carried us almost 11 miles! Gabby was such a trooper and biked it all. We stopped for a picnic and on the way back, the boys took a little cat nap. What could be better? A day in the sunshine, getting some exercise with family. What a great day!
